POSITIONS:
Subject to sufficient budget, positions in the school may include, but not be limited to, the following licenses:
- NYC DOE CERTIFIED Middle School Special Education, Mathematics and Assistant Principal. Dual certification in ESL and content area preferred.

DESCRIPTION:
The Waterside School for Leadership, along with its parents and community members, is dedicated to serving the diverse scholars of New York City by creating a collaborative and supportive educational environment where college bound scholars in grades 6-8 are Leaders of their Lives, Learning and Community. Waterside fosters in our students a sense of community, an understanding of leadership and a commitment to ethical behavior that encourages them to become positive change agents in high school, college and beyond. Our curriculum is one that integrates inquiry- based learning with service-learning projects to create authentic learning experiences within a real-world context and encourage a stronger sense of social responsibility and civic awareness. We believe that creating a small, supportive environment with high expectations for all will lead to the success of our scholars.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
New York City DOE CERTIFICATION in the appropriate content area, with satisfactory ratings

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Roles in small schools are varied and complex and serious consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate through their resume and cover letter experience and/or willingness to become involved in these essential aspects:
Collaborating in an inter-disciplinary planning and teaching team with an emphasis on course design using backwards planning models developed by Wiggins McTighe
Practicing an open-door policy and developing best practice pedagogy to facilitate professional growth and collaboration
Using differentiated instruction techniques, project-based learning and the Workshop Model to facilitate the accommodation of varied interests, intelligences, abilities and learning styles. For more information, see Tomlinson.
Serving as an advisor to small group of scholars throughout middle school to ensure that students and families have a personalized experience. For more information see Carol Lieber's "The Advisory Guide"
Coordinating special programs and school wide structures to help develop Waterside School Culture.
Developing individual goals for students and communicating effectively with students, families, and colleagues about student progress towards those goals
Assessing, monitoring and analyzing student data to refine curriculum, inform instructional practices and increase student achievement.


SELECTION CRITERIA:
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of capacity and willingness to carry out the above duties and responsibilities in accordance with the mission and core beliefs of the school:
Excellent classroom management skills are a must.
A genuine love for middle school students and a desire to see them succeed
Ability to incorporate hands-on and co-operative learning activities
Ability to develop and use project based learning units, utilizing planning backwards model
Ability to differentiate instruction for all students, including special education and English Language Learners within a non-traditional school schedule and organization structure
Ability to seamlessly integrate technology in the classroom
Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, students, etc
Current multi-faceted knowledge in the content area, with an emphasis on effective strategies.
Ability to incorporate reading and writing strategies in daily routines and classroom instruction
Familiarity with professional literature and best practice in content area

In addition to an interview, candidates must present a portfolio, which may include, a resume, evidence of philosophy of education, evidence of curriculum planning such as course outline and lesson plans, and any teaching/ supervisory artifacts collected throughout the teaching career. All artifacts may include student work, images of student work and presentations, and curriculum development examples. Teacher candidates should also be available for a demo lesson. Applicants must provide three references.
